Typically the project manager has a paid account to create and share multiple schedules with his or her team members and the team members have a free account to be able to collaborate on the various schedules of the project manager.
All Tom's Planner updates are free no matter what kind of account you have. Note: some new features might only be available to paid accounts.

You can choose an url to publish your schedule online. When changes are made to the project schedule, the published version will always be updated automatically. Others can view the last version of the project schedule simply by visiting the url in their web browser. They don't need to sign up with Tom's Planner. As the owner of a schedule, you can protect your schedule with a password.

You can collaborate on your schedules online and in real-time with your team members. When you invite someone else you can choose to give them read and/or write access to your schedules.
If you receive an invitation to collaborate on a schedule, a free account will suffice. If you want to invite others to collaborate on your schedules you will need a paid account.
To accept an invitation to collaborate on a schedule from for instance a project manager, a free account will suffice.

You can collaborate on your schedules online and in real-time with your team members. When you invite someone else you can choose to give them read and/or write access to your schedules.
You can export your schedules to an image that can be included in, for instance, your PowerPoint presentation or Word documents. You can also choose to print your schedule on one page or multiple pages.
In the left bottom corner you will find a Tom's Planner logo. In paid versions of Tom's Planner you can hide this logo or replace it with one of your own logos.
As your project evolves and grows in complexity you might need a tool more targeted at professional planners like MS Project. With Tom's Planner you can always export your schedule to MS Project.
You can choose to save your schedule offline on your own computer. If your schedule contains confidential information and you don't feel comfortable storing it on our servers, this might be an option for you.
You can embed schedules on any website, your intranet, Google wave or any project blog. It works the same as embedding your YouTube videos.
